Ovulation Calculator

Predict your ovulation date and fertile window to help plan for pregnancy or understand your menstrual cycle better.

Calculate Your Fertile Window

Enter your last period date and cycle length to predict your ovulation and fertility window.

Typical range: 21-35 days

How it works: Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next period. The fertile window includes 5 days before ovulation (sperm can survive) and 1 day after (egg viability).

Note: This calculator provides estimates based on average cycle patterns. Actual ovulation may vary. For family planning, consider using additional methods like ovulation predictor kits or basal body temperature tracking.

Understanding Ovulation

Ovulation is the release of an egg from one of your ovaries. It typically occurs about 14 days before your next period starts. Understanding when you ovulate is key to both achieving and avoiding pregnancy.

Your Fertile Window

The fertile window spans about 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. This is because:

  • Sperm viability: Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days.
  • Egg viability: An egg can be fertilized for about 12-24 hours after ovulation.

Signs of Ovulation

Cervical Mucus Changes

Around ovulation, cervical mucus becomes clear, stretchy, and similar to egg whites - optimal for sperm transport.

Basal Body Temperature

Your resting temperature rises slightly (0.5-1°F) after ovulation and stays elevated until your next period.

Mild Cramping

Some women experience mittelschmerz - mild one-sided pelvic pain during ovulation.

Increased Libido

Many women notice a natural increase in sex drive around their most fertile days.

Menstrual Cycle Phases

  • Menstruation (Days 1-5): The shedding of the uterine lining when pregnancy doesn't occur.
  • Follicular Phase (Days 1-13): The body prepares for ovulation as follicles develop in the ovaries.
  • Ovulation (Day 14): A mature egg is released from the ovary.
  • Luteal Phase (Days 15-28): The body prepares for possible pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, the cycle restarts.

Tips for Accurate Tracking

  • Track multiple cycles: Cycle lengths can vary. Track 3-6 months for better predictions.
  • Use ovulation predictor kits: These detect the LH surge that occurs 24-36 hours before ovulation.
  • Monitor cervical mucus: Changes in cervical mucus can confirm your fertile days.
  • Track basal body temperature: A sustained rise confirms ovulation occurred.

When to Consult a Doctor

Consider speaking with a healthcare provider if you:

  • Have irregular periods (cycles shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days)
  • Haven't conceived after 12 months of trying (or 6 months if over 35)
  • Experience painful periods or pelvic pain
  • Have concerns about your reproductive health
