Understanding Rectangular Prisms
A rectangular prism (also called a cuboid or rectangular box) is a 3D shape with 6 rectangular faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. All angles are right angles (90 degrees). It is one of the most common shapes encountered in everyday life.
Key Properties:
- 6 rectangular faces (3 pairs of congruent opposite faces)
- 12 edges (4 edges of each dimension)
- 8 vertices with 3 edges meeting at each
- All internal angles are 90 degrees
Rectangular Prism Formulas
Worked Example: A 12 × 8 × 5 Box
Suppose a shipping box measures 12 in long, 8 in wide, and 5 in tall. The volume is V = 12 × 8 × 5 = 480 cubic inches. The surface area is A = 2(12×8 + 12×5 + 8×5) = 2(96 + 60 + 40) = 392 square inches — the amount of cardboard needed (before flaps and overlap). The space diagonal, D = √(12² + 8² + 5²) = √233 ≈ 15.26 in, is the longest rigid object that fits inside the box, such as a rod placed corner to corner.
Solving Backwards from Volume or Surface Area
You do not always know all three dimensions. If you know the volume and two sides, the third is h = V / (l × w). This calculator supports those reverse modes directly: enter volume plus length and width (or length and height, or width and height), or surface area plus two dimensions, and it solves for the missing side along with every other measurement.
Practical Use Cases
- Shipping and packaging: volume determines dimensional weight pricing used by carriers.
- Aquariums and tanks: volume in cubic centimeters converts directly to liters (1,000 cm³ = 1 L).
- Construction: concrete for a rectangular slab or footing is ordered by volume.
- Storage planning: the space diagonal tells you whether a long item fits inside a container.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the volume of a rectangular prism?+
Multiply length by width by height: V = l × w × h. For example, a box measuring 4 m × 3 m × 2 m has a volume of 24 cubic meters. Keep all three dimensions in the same unit before multiplying — mixing centimeters and meters is the most common source of errors.
What is the space diagonal of a box and how is it found?+
The space diagonal is the straight line connecting two opposite corners through the interior of the box. It is computed with the 3D Pythagorean theorem: D = √(l² + w² + h²). It is always longer than any edge or face diagonal, and it answers questions like whether a pole fits inside a moving box.
Can this calculator find a missing dimension if I know the volume?+
Yes. Choose one of the reverse input modes: given the volume and any two dimensions, it solves the third using h = V / (l × w). It can also work backwards from surface area plus two known dimensions, then reports the full set of results including diagonals.
What is the difference between a rectangular prism, a cuboid, and a cube?+
Rectangular prism and cuboid are two names for the same shape: a box with six rectangular faces meeting at right angles. A cube is the special case where length, width, and height are all equal, so all six faces are identical squares.
Is this tool free and does it work on mobile?+
Yes. The calculator is free, requires no account, and runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server. The responsive layout works on phones and tablets, which is handy for measuring boxes or rooms on the spot.
