How to Use This Wallpaper Calculator

Our wallpaper calculator helps you determine the exact number of rolls needed for any room. Enter your room dimensions, select a roll size, specify the number of doors and windows, and optionally add pattern repeat information for the most accurate estimate.

Understanding Wallpaper Roll Sizes

US Standard Single Roll

20.5 inches wide × 33 feet long, covering approximately 56 square feet. Most common in North America.

US Double Roll

20.5 inches wide × 66 feet long, covering approximately 112 square feet. Often more economical per square foot.

Euro Standard

21 inches wide × 33 feet long, covering approximately 58 square feet. Common with European wallpaper brands.

Metric Roll

0.53 meters wide × 10 meters long, covering approximately 57 square feet. Standard in Europe and Asia.

What is Pattern Repeat?

Pattern repeat is the vertical distance between where the pattern repeats on the wallpaper. This measurement is crucial because:

  • Matching patterns: Adjacent strips must align at the seams, requiring extra paper to match the pattern.
  • Increased waste: Larger pattern repeats mean more waste when cutting strips to match.
  • Types of match: "Straight match" patterns align horizontally, while "drop match" patterns offset by half the repeat.

The pattern repeat measurement is usually printed on the wallpaper packaging or in product specifications.

Waste Allowance Guide

  • 10%: Solid colors or very small patterns. Minimal matching required.
  • 15%: Standard allowance for most patterns. Accounts for normal cutting waste and mistakes.
  • 20%: Large pattern repeats or complex matching. Recommended for first-time installers.
  • 25%: Very large patterns, murals, or rooms with many obstacles like fireplaces and built-ins.

Tips for Wallpapering

  • Buy from same lot: Wallpaper from different production runs may have slight color variations.
  • Order extra: Buy 1-2 extra rolls for future repairs or mistakes during installation.
  • Check return policies: Most stores allow returns of unopened rolls within 30-90 days.
  • Prepare walls properly: Clean, smooth, primed walls ensure better adhesion and easier removal later.
  • Use a plumb line: Start your first strip with a perfectly vertical line for straight installation.
