Understanding Leap Years
Leap years have 366 days instead of 365, with February having 29 days instead of 28. This extra day compensates for the fact that Earth's orbit around the Sun takes about 365.25 days.
A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except for century years, which must be divisible by 400.
The Leap Year Rule, Step by Step
The Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582, decides leap years with three tests applied in order:
- If the year is divisible by 4, it is a leap year…
- …unless it is also divisible by 100, in which case it is a common year…
- …unless it is also divisible by 400, in which case it is a leap year after all.
So 2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4, not by 100). 1900 was not a leap year (divisible by 100 but not 400), while 2000 was (divisible by 400). The next century year to skip the leap day will be 2100.
Why the Century Exception Exists
A tropical year — the time Earth takes to return to the same point in its seasonal cycle — lasts about 365.2422 days. Adding a day every 4 years assumes a year of exactly 365.25 days, which overshoots by roughly 11 minutes per year. The older Julian calendar used only the divisible-by-4 rule, and by the 16th century it had drifted about 10 days out of step with the seasons. Dropping 3 leap days every 400 years (the century rule) brings the average calendar year to 365.2425 days, accurate to about 1 day in 3,200 years.
Worked Examples
- 2028: 2028 ÷ 4 = 507 with no remainder, and it is not a century year → leap year.
- 2100: divisible by 4 and by 100, but 2100 ÷ 400 = 5.25 → not a leap year.
- 2400: divisible by 400 → leap year.
- 2027: not divisible by 4 → not a leap year.
Leap Years From 2024 to 2048
2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, 2044, and 2048 are all leap years — every 4 years without exception in this range, since the next century year (2100) is far away.
